Q&A

Why were you drawn to studying Psychology?

I always knew I would pursue a career in a helping profession. This was always my strongest “why” for doing anything - to help someone else, to share knowledge, build confidence, empower and reduce suffering. And ever since I first learnt about a gentleman by the name of Sigmund Freud back in high school, I have known I wanted to study and become a psychologist. Since that day, I have been fascinated by the mind and the “why” behind behaviour. To me there is nothing more interesting. Today, I am privileged to work with clients to discover, explore and build their “why”. This is what gives me meaning, purpose and satisfaction, and why I can’t see myself doing anything else.

What do you enjoy about your work, and what are you interested in or fascinated by?

The best part of my job is...the people! It's something so obvious but we can often forget - everyone is living a life as unique, rich and complex as your own. I am reminded of this every day by my clients. I consider it such a privilege to work with my clients, hold and share space with them, hear about their experiences, be inspired by their resilience and learn about their inner world. It highlights to me the diversity of human experience and, at the same time, the common threads that connect us all together.

What drives you to show up for yourself and your clients in this role?

I am driven to better myself every day because the more I develop as a psychologist, the better I can help and support my clients. It motivates me to keep learning and I take my role very seriously because I know how hard, and at the same time how powerful change, however big or small, can be. I believe in the capacity of my clients to learn and grow and am driven to bridge the gap between where they are today and what they are fully capable of.

What have people said about your approach to this work?

My supervisors have been kind enough to say that I have a calm laid-back style that is warm and creates a safe space for clients to express themselves authentically - and that is something I aim for in every session.
